ac not blowing cold compressor making strange noise

This week was our first nice week of the year. Monday I got in my truck at lunch time turned the a.c. on and it blew ice cold. Today my truck sat in the sun all day and I got in it and turned the a.c. on. I noticed instead of the normal "click" you hear when the clutch engages in the a.c. compressor I got a wine and wimper kind of noise. The system never cooled the air after this happened. Anybody have any suggestions? Is the compressor shot? Is it safe to drive or is the compressor going to tear itself up and send metal pieces thru the system?

Would this be causing noise coming from the compressor?

If the clutch is slipping, yes, it can make odd noises.

Hi chrislambing,

If you're worried about driving your truck, you can always give your service manager a call for advice. Also, you can contact Roadside Assistance at 1-800-241-3673. How many miles are on the truck now? I'll hang around this thread in case you need additional assistance.

Been there, CHECK belt tension! I did it was slightly lose, just enough that it worked fine until the AC clutch engaged, then it slipped and it had done so for so long that the belt had burnished. I tightened it, it worked I did replace the belt after it started slipping again and problem solved.

Well I ended up taking it to a local shop. They said it had a considerable leak somewhere and put uv dye in it. They had the truck for 6hrs and said it idled for about 2 hrs. They black lighted the whole system (except for the evaporator that is buried in the dash) and they found nothing. It is currently blowing cold. He also said it seemed like I had a weak compressor and it had some rattling noise when the clutch engages and that it didn't "suck" in the clutch as hard as it should. I'm thinking that I have a bad coil on the compressor and a leaky evaporator. Anyone else want to add their two cents worth?
