I have a 97 F-150...4.6L and when I turn the defroster on I can hear ??the pulley banging back and forth when the defroster is on. Why?? Only does it when the defrost is in...no other settings. AC works fine.
Well, the compressor does turn on when you use defrost, except on cold winter days when it is below freezing. Turn the fan speed all the way up when on defrost and see if the cycling stops. When in defrost, you probably aren't moving as much air across the ac coil and thru the air ducts as when in ac or heat mode and therefore, the compressor will cycle more often.
IF the ac works fine, I wouldn't worry about it. You can always unplug the clutch in the winter to keep the ac compressor from coming on. I used to do this on my older fords but not anymore. It's too darn humid hear in Houston in the winter so the dehumidifying action with the compressor dries the air out better.
