auto tranny color and smell ??

Not sure what "smells pretty bad" means, but our tranny fluid won't smell like "Old Spice"!!!! lol
From the color you say the fluid is, I doubt it's been over heated, so if you have the factory tube & fin cooler I doubt it's bad, but as has been said, there are smaller, more efficient, temp controlled, flat plate coolers to be had.
Dropping the pan & refilling it, only removes about 40% of the old fluid, as most remains in the valve body, torque converter, cooler & lines, only to contaminate the new fluid you added to refill the tranny pan.
Here is how the Dealer used to get nearly all of the old fluid out, before they got their Routunda flush machine.
