I noticed that there is a small star-shaped crack in my paint. It is about the size of a dime and is barely noticable unless you get the light reflecting at just the right angle. I would like to get it fixed before it gets worse. The paint is about 5 years old and is a single stage lacquer.
My question is: Are there any nifty fixes (tricks) that a paint shop can do short of removing and repainting that spot?
I tried on the paint section of FTE, but got no response.
It very well could be stone chips from the road as that is a common problem on the fenders especially if you have glass fenders but also on metal fenders, the stone makes a little dent from the bottom side of the fender and cracks the paint and has to be sanded out, dent fixed, primed and repainted. A good coat of rubberized under-coat can help with this problem, Garry
Usually a star shaped cracked area like that is the result of something impacting the inside of the panel, like a rock or other similar piece of debris. The problem is worsened by the fact that you have lacquer paint...very brittle. To effect a lasting repair on this cracked area you will have to remove the paint down to the primer...get out all cracked paint or it will crack back through any new paint you apply over it. Hopefully you have some of the original paint that you can use for touch up. After removing the damaged paint you will have to fill that area with primer and block sand it smooth so that you have a level surface. Paint the area with the color coat and feather the edges with some thinner as you spray. Color sand and buff.
I knew a painter that airbrushed spiders, mushrooms, and other small oddities over paint chips. That might be a short term answer to cover up the problem until you find someone that can actually fix it for you. Just a stray thought.
Thanks guys, I went to my painter and he says that he wants to grind it off, repaint the spot, and then matt finish clear the whole fender to match the rest of the car. NO WAY. I'll just have to live with it until it gets worse. Jag

While that would be the correct way to repair the chip, it is a lot of work for one, small blemish. I think you have the right plan. If you drive your truck at all, chances are, you'll have several more before you're done. Just drive and enjoy your truck!
For all of its pitfalls, laquer has the advantage of being very repairable. It dissolves in the solvents that are used in the paint, so if you spray a new coat over an old coat it will cut into the existing paint for a good bond. That being said....if you use a single strand artist brush to dab a tiny amount of paint into your star-crack, it will bond. You could try that, and wet sand/buff it out a few days later....the crack might disappear. It might also get worse, but it'd probably not if you're careful.
Dan, that's very interesting. I just don't know if I'm that brave. But, something to contemplate. John
Can you hurt anything? If you dab a little paint into the crack and it doesn't fix it then you still have the same problem you started with so what can it hurt?
