Question Temporary fix for peeling clear-coat

The top edge of my passenger side front fender has started to peel/flake off the clear. I know that the whole thing needs to be resprayed to properly fix this but I'm hoping to get the whole truck straightened/painted in the next year or so. Until then I was hoping to at least keep it from peeling any more by masking/prepping/rattle-can clear-coating just the affected area. Any recommendations on the type of paint to use??
The reason I ask is this. I build models as a hobby and recently tried to clear coat one of my models with the paint I'd originally bought for this fender job. Now the model paints are acrylics and when I shot this auto-parts store paint onto my model it killed the paint job. The whole thing went cloudy/dull. I'm afraid of making the fender situation worse by shooting the wrong paint onto it.
Should I just leave well enough alone until I can paint the whole truck?

auto motive paint does not mix with acrilic/model paint its like spraying paint thinner on it pretty much
