check engine light

i was wondering if you can access the port below my dash without buying a tool my mustang i wounce had u could jump a wire in between and the check engine light would flash a code can u do this with a 97 ranger xl 2wd? Anyway the check engine light has come on and was wondering why the truck seems to be running fine and also does anyone have or knoew where to get the computer (possibility) codes so i can try to figure this out...

Welcome to FTE!!!

Your 1997 truck is OBD-II and requires a scanner to get the codes, your Mustange was probably before 95. Some parts stores will pull the codes for free.
