Okay, so I started with column issues, and found out the gear was bad. My question is while I am tearing everything apart, should I go ahead and replace all the tie rods, and steering links?? I am leaving it all stock because I am a near purist when it comes to my truck. Let me know what you think.
Broom, I would if it were my truck, once you replace/rebuild the steering box and column
the other weak parts will show them selfs real quick. plus if those parts are worn out the rest of them will be as well.
I'd replace it all too Broom, 'cause I'm stingy with my time.
As long as you're in there you may as well do it all so you don't have to track down another problem later thereby wasting time.
Yeah I replaced the tie rod, and the ends (CPP kit for about the price of just the tie rod ends), then new drag link, and King Pins... wow does it drive nice now! it is almost like having power steering... did new shocks, while I was at it that smoothed out the ride
Well, I listened. I have ordered everything from the top of the column to the end of the tie rods. All will be replaced with new or rebuilt. The only things with my steering that will not be new, are the king pins, and the steering wheel. Better to know I can steer.
Funny thing! I replaced all of my steering parts, and the steering turned so easily, that I put on a 15"steering wheel, which gave it a tighter feel. You will enjoy it after you get it dialed in.
By the way, I had a alignment shop do the tie rod and tie rod ends, and the alignment. It was only a few buck more than a front end alignment, which you will need to do anyway. And it made the alignment easy for them, as they could dial it in as they did the install.
If you're going to do it yourself Broom, make sure that you install the new parts at the same length as the old parts. That will get you in the ballpark, so you can then have it aligned. I've done this type of work on several vehicles, and it is very satisfying job. Good luck.
Count the threads on the tie rod ends...the right side is not adjustable...Theres only the two left side ends that are adjustable..inner and outer.Im pretty much doing the same thing...replacing everything except king pins...although I am replacing axles with good pins...and when the day comes I have a NOS king pin kit...just wish it had bronze bushings though...
Just make sure the steering box adjustment isnt maxxed out as that can cause premature wear on its inners....
Did you replace the turn signal switch as well??

When I bought the truck the wiring harness was destroyed, many splices, and the PO had wired the battery backwards, and so the first thing I did was rewire the truck. During that process the wires from the turn signal switch were random lengths, and so I bought a new one. I even went to Ford to get it, because it was the same price as the aftermarket guys.

That is the only thing I didn't replace when I did mine, it;s old but it works good.
Ford sells that switch for $30. ?? They vary like crazy in price but I was thinking about buying one from Carpenter for 30 just to have and replace if needed.
I better jump on it then because it's $30 now.
That place in OK City OK Obsolete and classic auto parts, had the best prices over all. Those bearings are $5 and the rag joint was $30. I guess I;m used to ebay because I ordered some things from Carolina classic and it's been almost 3 weeks and they still haven't shown up, and $10 to ship 3oz.
Negative feedback, lol.
It's amazing how cheaply the bearings are made but considering that they only turn less than one revolution with each corner. Not made to last too long.
