i drive a 1990 f150 and its got the loosest steering, i have at least a 1/4 turn of play, and i was just wondering if i have to replace the whole steering column or just replace something.
check your tie rods like texasguy said. there maybe a load screw on the steering box and you can tighten it a turn or 2. also the joint in the steering shaft may have play.
yes check the tre's..other than that the main culprit for it is gunna be the gearbox...the worm gear inside of it wears and just about 95% of the older model ford trucks out there have a little bit of play because of it. mines pretty worn but ill ride it out for a little bit longer....
have someone sit in the truck and turn the wheel back and forth while you look at the connector point on the steering column in the engine bay where the upper column meets the lower column for play. there is a teflon bushing that is held in place by a spring steel clip. if the clip breaks, the bushing will fall out, leaving you with about 1/4 turn play in the steering.

Go no more than a 1/8-1/4 turn at a time on the adjustment screw...the worm gear is easy to screw up!!!!
