hey guys. more less new around here. i used to be really active on ford ranger sites but grew tired of the kids bickering, so i don't get onto the super duty sites often. bought my 03 7.3 f250 in November 2010 after my 2008 ranger got tboned and totaled. love this damn truck! havein a blast. putting miles on the beast and working my way through the quirks and kinks of a used truck.
latest thing is keyless entry! truck has power locks and windows. the dealer i got it from had no fob for it. after breaking down and buying a 60 dollar fob from ford i go to program it and nothing. mann! i think this damn clicker was expensive! so here i am. i did some searching and to no avail did i find any good direction to answer my questions.
so my question is the trucks build date was 09/02 it was sold as a model yr 03, does it use the GEM module for keyless operations or the VSM module? from the little reading i did 02 was the year they went to the GEM?
basicaly where is it in the dash and can i make the factory keyless work? is it something simple as a dealer reprogram or is it more? im trying to stay away from aftermarket systems A: no money haha B: im kinda wary of whom instals them.
hopefuly i make sence guys and maybe can help me out!
Joe: I had the same thing. 2003 (10/2002 build date). Bought in 08. It did not have the keyless entry option.
I bought an after market amd they installed it. Around $ 150. I think. Have a dealer parts guy print you out a build sheet. Take the Vin: with you. Jim
To answer your question, save for the after market.

herm, not what i wanted to hear... i dont know, ive never cared for the aftermarket stuff. my main reason is cutting into the factory harness. i had a truck that used to have a aftermarket alarm/keyless set up, when i bought it the system was no longer on the truck, but all the hacked off wires were and bad splices that caused me allll kinds of greif for over a year.
Mine has worked flawlessly for 4 years. And I understand about wires. Whoever installed the trailer wiring for a 5ver left the biggest Gom of bundled wires I have ever seen. But it ir not worth changing. Jim
i ask because im new to the superdutys. when i had my 2 rangers i knew them inside and out. when i went to the dealer parts counter the parts guy dident even bother asking me what i needed he handed me the keyboard LOL!
also with these newer truck sometimes its a simple reflash of a module or buy a black box and insert it in the harness here kind of deal to make the factory stuff work. if thats the case im all for it.
my 94 ranger did not have keyless my 08 ranger did and i got spoiled heh.
I have a 2002 and a 2006 I have been able to program fobs from a 97 F250 a 2004 F150 I have seen the fob on ebay for 20 bucks https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...k-key-fob.html
In post 7 tells you how to program the fob
and apparently my local dealers are not sure enough of there computer ability to look up a build sheet. i get more i dont knows from them than a kid...
When I bought my truck an 03 it did not come with a fob. I went to my local dealer bought the fob and they pretty much did what it say's in the link above. Is there another dealer in your area that you could get help from?
i bought a fob.....and ive tryed to program it with the directions from my owners manual. either im doing it wrong or i dont have it.
how do i tell if the truck has it OTHER THAN trying to see if it will go into program mode...
After you cycled the key 8 times ending up on the on position did the truck lock then unlock to confirm its in the program mode? maybe even check the battery in the fob that could be dead or not even there.
