I WAS WONDERING CAN OUR LOCK OUT HUBS BE SERVICED IN ANY MANOR. I HVE BEEN GETTING A GROWLING NOISE FROM THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE. I HAVE REPLACED THE WHEEL BEARING AND ROTATED THE TIRES AND STILL HAS THE SAME GROWLING NOISE. ANY IDEAS?
Can you hear a noise while turning the wheel with it jacked up? You can also remove the locking hub temporarily and go for a short test drive to see if that eliminates the growl. The bearing in the locking hub may dry. The hub spins "around" the gear on stub axle shaft when it is in the "unlock" position.
I am actually thinking needle bearings possibly, if the hub is unlocked, it shouldn't be moving. I would lock the hubs in and go for a ride, if the noise goes away, that points to needle bearings as the hub is carrying the load off of them.
Check them soon I did not have the growl but one of my needle bearings froze and I ended up replacing the axle shaft, unit bearing etc, I was lucky and got a axle from the junk yard to scavange all the parts from. It would have been a very expensive fix otherwise.
