Look at the hubs. If they say "AUTO" and "LOCK" they are automatic, if they say "FREE" and "LOCK", you need to lock them manually.
With the automatic hubs, you can still lock them manually if you wish by turning the **** to the LOCK position. This is a nice option to have in case the vacuum lock system fails, because you won't be stuck somewhere without 4WD.
...also...if you have the ESOF system...you will have a **** on the dash with Auto hubs. If you have the manual lever on the floor, then you'll have manual hubs too.

What he said.. If you have a ****, they are auto hubs. If you have a leaver, they are manual.
The auto hubs have a fail safe and can be locked manually if need be. (Ford was smart and not arrogant enough to think that their stuff never fails.)
Also, if you have auto hubs, check their operation before you need them. They tend to develop vacuum leaks.
It's also not a bad idea to manually lock the hubs in once a month or so and drive 5 to 10 miles with the dash switch or lever staying in 2hi of course. That will keep the internal of the hubs and front differential lube and working so there are no surprises if you ever do need them.
