Engine oil: If you drive a lot and wish to extend your oil drain intervals, synthetic engine oil can save you some time & money. If you prefer to change the engine oil as per the OEM recommended interval, the Motorcraft 5w20 and Motorcraft filter combo is a great value.
Grease: Unless some aftermarket parts have been installed, your truck shouldn't have any grease zerks.
Gear lube: I would absolutely change the gear lube in the front and gear differential. Most of the break-in wear occurs during the 15,000 miles, and it is beneficial to get the factory fill drained shortly after that point. My F350 had 80,000 miles on the oil in the rear diff. when I bought it; the drain/fill plugs were covered with metallic paste and the speed sensor was fouled with metal. 80w90 or 75w90 is fine for the front diff, 75w140 with the proper friction modifier (assuming your truck has a limited slip diff.) is recommended for the rear.

Do you have these reversed? My 97 F250 spec says to use 80-90W in the rear w/ friction modifier (Rear Axle Lubricant XL-80W90-QL WSP-M2C197-A) and 4x4 gear oil in the front (4x4 Gear Oil F1TZ-19580-A WSL-M2C191-A), which I was told is 75W140. I just changed my front diff oil to 75W140, as I was told to use from the auto parts store. I put Wolf 80W90 + friction mod in the rear.
I was looking to confirm the 75W140 was equiv to the Ford 4x4 gear oil
I went ahead and purchased some MC 5w20 oil, also the MC oil filter. Wally world did not have the MC air filter nor did autoz. or adv. auto. Guess I will have to order it online or visit the ford dealer for a hell of a mark up.. Next is to maybe have the injectors cleaned 75K miles and never had it done.
Fram air filters are fine and are readily available. But anything that touches oil, I stick with MC.
My truck is a 2004 F150 5.4l Lariat 4x4. I bought it in 2004 and have always had the maintenance performed at the local Ford dealer. I figured it is about time I start doing the routine stuff myself (like my other cars..). Question is, should I stick with all motorcraft fluids like the dealer used or switch? I was going to buy some Amsoil lube for the jeep which can also be used on the truck's u joints and other zirc fittings..
engine oil: switch to synthetic or stay with a non-synthetic (brand)?
differential lubricant change: maintenance guide says only to change at 150K, should I not worry about it until then? (no leaks) Type?
transmission fluid: I assumed it had been changed already if needed, byt the way, what is 4r100? Looks like thats means a change every 30k
transfer case: book says change at 150K...switch to something else?
Just a couple other questions, anyone use Lucas oil for the tranny? If so, which one. There is one for automatics and another oil (name?) for manual trannys..
Thanks ahead of time..
Paul
