Changing Fluids

Plz don't turn this into a war between oils. Feel free to PM me if you have a good suggestion on what brand i should use. I hate trying to get the good info out of a 12page thread on who has the bigger *****.

Once things settle down i plan on getting all the oil's changed in my new to me X. From what i got off the door jam, i believe i just have a plane 3.73 gear'd axle's. the rear is not supposed to be LS. I figured to go full synthetic but not 100% sure. Would like to hear your nice thoughts.

Do you all use synthetic's in the following if not put what kind (not brand)...

Axles -
Xcase-
Tranny-
Motor-

Plz keep it simple and possibly include the rating.

Motor: Mobil 1 syn 5w 20. If i could find penzoil syn 5w 20, i would deff use it. Change every 3,000 miles.

Tranny: Reg non syn. Change every 20,000 to 25,000. Whats a good oil on ur tranny?

Rearend: I had the rearend oil changed out at 90,100 miles and now the truck has 103,150 miles on it. How often and what oil do you recommend for the rearend?

The diff oil is already synthetic from the factory. Manual states no need to change unless the axle has been submerged in water. However, 75K is a good time change especially if the truck is used for heavy towing. Use whatever synthetic you can afford. The weight is on the diff tag. (I cannot remember exactly off-hand because these kind of things don't need to be commited to memory since it's plastered on the truck. )

Tcase and tranny use the same fluid. Use Mercon V if you can find it. If not MERCON is allowed (now) and many fluid makers make it. Synthetic is nice. Use whatever you can afford. 20K between changes is wasteful unless you are really pushing the thing loaded up hills at a slow speed all the time (sorry IEH). 30K is recommended and works just fine for 98% of the owners.

Engine calls for 5W-20 semi-synthetic. Motorcraft makes a FINE oil. It has fantastic UOA (Used Oil Analysis) and most find they can go farther than the 5K recommended changes. I still do 5K, though. 5W-30 is also fine to use in it. Motorcraft also has a great 5W-30 right next to the 5W-20. Motorcraft filters are also the best for it. Both filter and oil are available at Wal-Mart for cheap.

You have that backwards. MERCON is the old fluid that is being replaced by MERCON V.

MERCON is what the manuals say to use, but Ford is stopping the licenses on MERCON and replacing it with MERCON V.

I use the same engine oil a the army does in their diesel trucks. I get it at a great $ and have never had an issue. Every 5K it is changed with filter ( Motorcraft).

I used the MerconV in my last tranny fluid change. Been several thousand miles now and all is well.

Curious question though is why is MerconV so hard to find? I had to go to two Advance Auto's to get the Valvoline brand to stay consistent with all the quarts needed for the change.

Last week, I still see that they are not stocking up on it.

Don't really know why. Maybe the answer is in the Transmission forum.
