Okay, here is the issue. I got stuck and had to be towed twice in two days.......lol.....thankfully I had AAA and I was stuck less than three miles from the house. I came out of the store and put the key in and turned the ignition and got nothing. I had interior lights and headlights, but no clicking or anything when I turned the key over. Anyway, the first day I decided that it was the starter and put a new one in. It ran for the rest of the day and started without issue.......I am pretty sure I started it seven or eight times without incident. The next day went to the same store and came out and again......same no start. Got towed to the house and put a solenoid relay in and then the same thing....no start. Finally I got my meter out and put it on the little wire on that solenoid relay and got no voltage when I had the wire attached and not attached. It seems as though the issue is intermittent, sometimes the key will start it and sometimes not. Does the little wire(ignition signal wire) have a fusible link on that line? At this point I am guessing that I need a new ignition.........am I close here? Thanks for any and all help.
Precisely the question I was about to ask, Al. My safety switch for park went out today. Filled up at the station, hopped back in the truck, went to crank it and got nothing. Dropped it in to neutral and fired right up.
but really, what the other guys said. try wiggling the shifter while the key is in start position. it may just be an alignment issue with the Neutral safety switch.
No worries. Funny thing is I spent my lunch brake tightening up those torx and adjusting my pointer only to come in and find you'd posted that. Certainly helped to confirm I was headed in the right direction. Also my park/no start problem is now solved. Thanks.
I just got done tightening mine. One was already tight; the other was about to fall out.
My starter failed last week, and last night it didn't want to start again. After wiggling the gear selector around, it started on the 4th try. Hopefully, this solves the non-start issue.
The torx bit size is T30.
BTW, the starter WAS shot originally. Just coincidence the gear selector problem reared its ugly head.
Sorry guys, I have not been back on the site in a bit. I have been getting intermittent starts with the key. I will admit that most starts are happening with the key. Today I read the post about the shifter and decided, well why don't I try moving the thing some and when I did.......it started right up right after I moved the thing. I guess I gotta get under there and tighten some stuff up. Thanks for all the input.........
I did find those two screws loose and one just about fallen out. That cured the shifter sloppiness for sure. It has been starting with the key for days now. I will give it more time to be sure things are all set. Thanks for the help once again.
Oh yes, the truck has been starting just fine and it has been a couple of weeks since I last had to use a screwdriver to get the truck running. I am more than happy with the results!! Thanks to all who gave the ideas and help. Gotta love this site!
