Im installing a new HEI distributor in my 1979 ford E-150 302. The positive wire to my coil no longer receives power and lost power when the old distributor was in. Would i be able to hook up my HEI distributor to the positive lead on my battery and run with a kill switch. Or would this harm my ignition and or charging system. The van runs the factory motorcraft Duraspark ignition system. I currently have the HEI dropped in and have been able to start the vehicle hotwiring the disto to the battery. Thanks for the help.
first of all, it sounds like you would do well to get the old wiring figured out
second, HEI was a chevy setup offered in the aftermarket for various vehicles including fords, i take it thats what you have... ok, well the HEI setup is designed to receive the full 12v battery power, so running a FUSED wire from the battery (starter solenoid hot terminal) to a switch and then to the dizzy would work for as long as you're willing to have an extra switch required to start/stop your engine. it won't hurt anything.
Alright thanks for confirming that. I wasnt sure if running it from the battery would harm my charging or ignition system... I looked at diagrams of my duraspark system. Its a rather simple set up but the wiring in the van is a mess and i dont have the time to invest in following it all. So im just gonna wire it to the battery with a switch.
