I am going to replace my tailgate on my 79 F150. It is bent up pretty bad on the upper lip, won't shut. I am thinking about getting a replacement shell from LMC or JcWhitney or Early Broncho. They run about $120 & aren't much more than a JY tailgate, plus no rust or dents.
So, has anybody bought any of these tailgates and/or have comments or suggestions?
Yeah the new ones are total POS. The first/last aftermarket one we used was for our 96 FORD. We rolled a oil barrel over it and it bent until it hit the bumper. We put a original gate on it rolled the oil barrel over it and the tailgate didn`t even budge.
x3 on the JY gate. I had a buddy who got a tailgate made out of Taiwan Tin. Let's just say the lawnmower ended the life of the tailgate, but a rusty old original tailgate held up to the same lawnmower.
yea the lmc gates are JUNK i had a nice looking one n me n my cousin sat on it n bent it needless to say that one ended up at the scrapyard because thats all it was good for so do some research n find u a good used one of oe material
From your user name it sounds like you live in seattle, head out to budget truck wrecking in auburn. They always have half a dozen 73-79 rigs, and they get new ones a couple times a week. You'll find a good tailgate there, I guarantee it!
Thanks everyone. I live on Seattle/Shoreline border (145th Street) so I will try Lynnwood first. I am going to see if I can straighten it out first driving on the bottom and using a jack against the frame for the top, nothing to lose.
Don't buy commy import. Buy oem used or DC repro with original tooling and thickness.
I was not able to straighten it, 'Ford tough' tailgate. I am going to go to JY next month and see what I can get for around $100 or so. Then I will do a roll-in bedliner once it is installed.
Yep, seen Taiwan TGs fold up before they even look like loaded, and I've had 4-500 pounds of wood [pellets or softener pellets in bags stacked on mine many times when oading / unloading.
Times like this I'm glad I have that OEM Ford 73-79 TG in it's box still, picked it up for near $100 at Magic City back in very early '90s when they were cleaning out old parts.
