Trans Pan

I was wondering if a deeper pan on my transmission would help keep things cool when towing my toy hauler. Its 40 foot 16K# and I'm going to Sheaffer syn also. Is it worth the trouble. I got a good price just wondered if it really helps. 2004, 6.0L cc lb 4x4. Thanks, Chet

You may be better off adding an external cooler, but the bigger capacity of a deeper pan should also help out.more oil sure isn't going to hurt anything.were you seeing high temps previously?.

A larger pan won't help with temps, it will just take a few minutes longer to reach those temps. How hot is the tranny getting? We've towed a lot heavier than 16k without getting too warm.

Mark Kovalsky, our resident ex-ford transmission engineer, gave a good technical explanation of why a bigger deeper pan is a waste of money.

Does the stock 08 pan hold more oil or just have raised fins?

The '08 pan is one I might get, just to have the real filter instead of just a screen.

Does the '08 truck also have the secondary filter outside the pan like the 6.0?

No, the internal filter was changed to a full flow filter instead of a screen and the bypass filter up by the cooler was eliminated. Since it is a bypass filter though, it wouldn't hurt to have both.

Thanks....that answer puts this MOD a long way DOWN my list....at least until I see my TFT numbers go higher than I seen them go....even while towing.

Thanks guys for all the answers. Its my boys 2004 truck and he had some issues with the motor and coolant that he is fixing with the bulletproof oil bypass and EGR upgrade. He was going to do the delect, I think he should of, But the dealer talked him out of it. He is doing ARP head studs as well. He had a 200,000 mileage warrinty from ford, He had problems, so they're doing the work he bought the parts above. AS far as trans we are using the Shaeffer syn. and the ford guy called last night and said he had this deeper pan and he would put it on for $50.oo . He went for it, I just don't think it going to do what he wants. Dealer Mechinic said it would hold maybe three or four quarts more oil.
I know on my 7.3 I went to the 6.0 cooler and ran it thur the radiator, Mine didn't have this, and it runs cool all the time. Anybody else had to do the above. Thanks Chet

He is stock, and know after market gauges, this was just a precaution for the trans. The motor on the other hand got near the red and the air stopped working. After inspection it did boil in the overflow so thats what started this all. Thanks again, sorry for the long post all your help is appreciated, God bless, Chet

He dose have the 6.0L rased truck, cc,lb 4x4 in need of gears. auto
