I have to do a brake job on my 95 Eddie Bauer. Ive ordered new pads, and rotors. My dust shields were so rusted if you poked it pieces would fall off. Ive tried looking around but im having a hard time finding some. Could I just leave them off. I did see them on bronco graveyard but they are 80 -99$ and I cant afford to spend that on a thin piece of metal thats going to rust in 3 years up here anyways.
You could always skip putting them on, but then you run a higher risk or damaging the new rotors and pads. You'd be better off leaving the old rusty ones on then removing completely, up to you. I know that the price for new ones is ridiculous.
There isnt much left to them. Pieces were getting wedged with the rotor and caliper scraping, and legit if i were to poke the shield pieces would fall off. I could go look at a junk yard but anything that old is likely to be rusted out especially in Mass
Well I have left the shields off before and no harm came. The military's Humvess dont have them at all, granted the brakes are located next to the diff and not the spindle so its up higher and more our of the way.
I'm re-opening this thread because I'm in a similar situation, except that I definitely want to use them. I was wondering what the OP ended up doing and if anyone has found any for a reasonable price.
I've also considered making them from scratch or trying to modify a different set. I could end up wasting money though If modifying an existing set doesn't work.
I never put them back on ,everyone I talked to said dont bother. I think to buy them new your going to atleast spend $110+ for me it aint worth it im in mass so I figure Id only get 5 years out of them. If you can make them yourself for cheaper than that id go for it...if you do post how it worked out
When I put my rotors on next week I will have a better idea of what I want to do. If I make them they will likely be ugly since I don't have metal working tools and will be improvising. As long as they work and aren't hurting anything they wont really be visible so im not worried about it. Should be fun though I love making things
