Low Turbo PSI

I have just installed a boost gauge on my '94 7.3L CC Dually Centurion Pacifica with the factory turbo. When I'm mashing the throttle to get it up a hill the gauge only shows 3psi. I was under the impression that it should be at least 5-7psi. There is no intake leak or leak from the gauge. The truck only has 110,000 miles on it. This has had a very easy life. No heavy loads until I got my hands on it. The bed still has shiny paint in it. PO must have kept in it a garage. Anyway what do you think I should look at? I have looked at the compressor side spool and there are some significant nicks on the edge of a few of the blades, no chips or pieces missing. You can also see where the the blades contacted the housing on the bottom. Is it possible that it can not build pressure because of the wobble and the nicks?

Wow yah thats not good.

The turbo wheel is not supposed to touch the housing, if it has, most likely the bearing is shot. At this point the assembly is no longer balanced and it could self destruct if you keep running it. Can you wobble the wheel around? If yes, you really need to rebuild or replace the turbo.

What tecgod said. The blades touching anything is not a good thing, nor are any nicks. These spin at a very high rpm and can cause problems when they self destruct, it does sound like you caught it in time for a rebuild.

+3 on the turbo needing to be overhauled. It won't get any better at this point and could fail in one of two spectacular ways.

1; The wheel flies apart and the engine may eat some of the shrapnel (there is an inlet screen but it won't stop smaller pieces). As it is, all the metal thats already been scraped off has gone through the engine (its only soft aluminum alloy, but still not a good thing to have the engine eating).

2; The loose bearings might allow oil to enter the intake stream in large amounts and could cause the engine to run away if the seal fails completely.

YIKES!!! I would stop driving that truck until you can get a new turbo, or turn it into a naturally aspirated engine. Thats just scary to hear that lo.

Dont drive anymore if that turbo self destructs you may be tearing down the engine all over what is simple to fix now.

All good advice to take, on all the wastegated turbos I have rebuilt a few have had a leaky wastgate.
You are definately in need of a rebuild, also even with all new parts in spec the ats will just touch the housing if the bushings are dry, they are that close, of course the oil film centers it all up when running, but yours is beyond that.

How can I tell what model it is so that I can get the rebuild kit for it? Again this a '94 with the factory turbo. It says Ford on the air filter cover not ATS. Who sells rebuild kits for these turbos?

The rebuild kits can be had in many places, its an ATS kit, I bet there is a crushed downpipe, its the ATS 093 kit.

Thanks for you help. Did a bit of research and found I can get all my parts except the red hose for less then $300. This includes the compressor wheel, turbine wheel w/ shaft and rebuild kit. That sound like a good price?

Yes that is a very good price, local people who rebuild turbos want anywhere from 400-700 dollars.
