I finally got my <a href="http://www.motorhaven.com/">Predator</a> tuner about a week ago and immediatly put in the 60 horse program. Now when I start my truck if the engine is cold after it starts to warm up it lopes and surges REALLY bad for about two or three minutes then it clears up and runs normally. While it does this it smokes black smoke. When I hold it at 1200 RPM or above it seems to clear up and it crusies normally. Anybody got ANY idea what the problem might be?
I also noticed that no matter what I set the tranny shift pressure at it diesn't seem to change the way the trans shifts. Still pretty mushy. It has a LOT more power and thats good. I don,t know yet if the milage has improved as I have just filled it for the first time. At $1.90 a gallon I hope so. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks KLR
Well I must be invisible! Two days and 44 visitor and no one replys. I kinda like this. Talking to myself. Hey self how can I fix this problem? Oh I know post a question and see if someone else knows. O.K. that sounds like a good idea I'll try it.
I dont have any answers to any of your questions, but I also installed the Predator on my 7.3 and had mushy shifts. I also moved the shift firmness all over the board with little effect. Trans actually shifts better in stock mode. I talked with Jolene about the shifts, she talked with Ken and he said that my code is one of those freak ones that wont cooperate. I cant say enough for Ken, Peggy and Jolene at FTE they had tried the Microtuner, two different Delta chips (I loved the way the Delta chips shifted but the glow plugs wouldnt cycle when it was 15deg or colder out with chip flipped to HP setting) and the Predator. I am shipping the Predator back for a full refund. Kinda bums me out, I have to drive this truck with stock HP untill I find something that will work. Again thanks to everyone at FTE for trying to get something to work with my code.
The 7.3's even in stock tune will idle up when you first crank them and let them idle - it seems very strange, but that's the nature of the beast... I typically just start moving when I crank it and it won't idle up too high...
Has something to do with getting the oil pressure up to the 3000 lbs per sq inch and temp up...
If the predator will not cooperate, I (and many others!) have had good luck with the Superchips Microtuner... and I just so happen to have one for sale since I'm replacing my 02 7.3 Ex with an 03 6.0 Ex.... 1705 is less than 6 months old and works perfectly...
The Predator will probably be going through updates as customer feedback comes in. Overall the results have been very good, with more positive feedback than we got when the Microtuner first came out. So far we've shipped about 20 of them with very good feedback. Don't get me wrong, the Microtuner is a great product with a low return rate.... looks like the Predator is going to be the same.
Well, interesting info. First it does'nt just idle up it lopes VERY badly and smokes a lot. I'm afraid it'll damage something. It runs fine with the 40 horse tune in it just less power. It actually even shifts a little better. Second I have NO idea what the ECM code is. Don't even know where to look. Let me know and I'll find out. The filters are new. I have no idea what the cetane rating of the fuel is. It's just regular diesel purchased at a retail pump. I can find out though. If I can't make this work I guess I'll be forced to return it although I really don't want to. I really like the code reader feature and the fact that I can put in different tunes in a short time.
Thanks everyone for the ideas. I'll keep playing with it and hopefully work it out.

Ken,
When these updates happen will we as predator owners be able to get them? I went to the Diablo web site and ask the same questions I asked here and got HO response from them. Pretty poor customer service I'd say.
Klr
Yes, the Predator can have programs installed by the user from their computer provided you buy a 12V power supply (really cheap at Radio Shack) and a 9 pin serial cable.
GOT IT! Code is VNAA8. I also came up with other numbers but I think this is the one your looking for. I really would like to get this resolved since this just happens to be exactly where (60 horse program) I am most comfortable with the operation of the truck. I was a truck mechanic for 17 years and know the importance of monitoring and maintaining a resonable exhaust temp. Eventually I will add a pyro and exhaust system but for now this would be good.
