I bought one last year; it is heavy. I like it though, even if 95% of my riding is on the street.
If you get a thumper, make sure you take off all critical nuts and bolts and loctite them or you will lose parts as you ride... parts that may be necessary for riding the thing.
The way I look at duel sports is this, KLR is mostly street oriented - DR is closer to 60 street 40 dirt - Honda XL is more dirt than street 25 dirt 75 street - KTM is a dirt bike made street legal. The KLR and DR will ride across the USA if you want. I chse the DR for it's simplicity. It is also air cooled like the Honda, but the DR does have an external oil cooler to help with temp.

Pertty much sums it up. Dont forget about the Doohickey that craps out. Go check out thumper talk or adventure rider for bike specific details etc. Some sweare by it, some hate it. Kinda like the Ford/Chevy/dodge thingy.
Get a YZ 450 or a CR 450 and add an MSR DOT kit to make it street legal!
Stay away from the 450's for dual sport. Their motors are not designed for the narrow RPM range of street riding. Plus, being race engines, they need regular rebuilds every couple years.
My opinion: XR650L...or even better, the XR650R with a baja designes DOT light kit. The R is LC'ed, and much more powerful than any other 650's. I would suggest the KTM...but they are expensive.
i guess some of you guys did not see his original thread on this subject which states he wants a dual propose bike to take to and from work but "still be able to go off road some" https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...pose-bike.html
i got the impression he was looking for a bike that was more street than dirt
I would go with the XR650L, as that is what I bought about 1 year ago to date and have 7500 miles on it and no problems. About 99.5% of those miles are on the road. After the standard rejetting and smog removal, it becomes a better bike. It should last for a long time, with regular maintenance, after all, its a honda.
If you think you may be inclined to do any road trips on it, don't get anything smaller than a 650.
And my "it is heavy" statment should be put into perspective. It's heavy for a dirtbike but it's more than a hundred pounds lighter than a bandit 600 street bike.
