How many of the rust through boxes have or don't have the front inner splash shield for the rear wheels. My 06 came without these shields and I added them (no rust through yet) but I'm curious if there is any correlation to additional rust in the rear arches with or without them...Anyone know what year Ford stopped installing them?

My 05 did not have them either. I did add them after I redid my truck however.
They may be built tough but they sure aren't undercoated! After all the gadgets and gizmos ford decided coating the bare metal under the truck would cost way to many pennies. Plus it is like job security, guys with money don't like rust and will be forced to buy a new truck when the rust shows threw. Its a win win!

lol thats very true, also i wish they used more sand here
In Idaho where I am from they use this magical stuff called sand on the roads. Seems to work pretty good.
not as well at salt and sand mixed together! We use the salt because there is a lot of thawing and freezing because of the rapid temp. changes here...we'll have a melt then a freeze that makes black ice. The salt hangs around and keeps the roads from icing quickly. It sucks.
The splash guards don't do anything
The rust comes from a spongy acoustic deadener on the inside lip of the wheel well
I'm never going to curse at three months of 95+ degree humid days again after reading this thread. From recently replacing my rear shocks, I noted that the rear suspension on my '02 still has all the factory black paint and even the factory part number stickers intact.
Come to think of it, last time I saw a crusty Ford pickup around here, I think it was an early 70's model.
