Dies your truck have the plug under the dash for a brake controller? It will be a little white connector with seven wires going into it. I'm just thinking that even though you didn't get a towing package the wiring might ne there.
If I am following the OP, I think he said he purchased the plug kit with the controller and plugged in under the dash.Since he has power to the controller, I am thinking his controller is not seeing a signal from the brakes or the ground is not good. I was going to pull the manual on the controller and parts listings for the plug adapter controller to truck. Right now need to know more about testing he has done so far. I would not move to the rear of the truck to do any checking until I established power to and through the controller at the dash.
I have a curtis discovery controller have not done any testing not sure how to go about doing it !!!!!! on my 2006 I just plugged in controller and everything worked fine but it had factory tow package . on this on I get the red decimal point but that is all thanks for the help
The red decimal point normally means you have power, but the controller is not finding a trailer. I am thinking your controller is okay. If you operate it manually, do you get any reading? I am thinking it is not finding anything to send power to. The reason I originally asked about the controller is I wanted to know if it was a model with diagnostics. They make things really simple.
Let's talk about your seven pin at the rear of the truck. You originally had a four pin so you had marker, signal, and brake lights along with a ground. How did you go about setting up the charge line and brake line for your trailer as you did not have them in your four pin?
I assumed that being the truck had the wiring plug under dash and the dealer sold me the harness for the rear with 7/4 prong I figured all of the wiring was ran at factory and was just plug and play??? am I assuming wrong???

Michael,
That's a darn good question and I don't know the answer. The easiest way to check is to pick up a seven pin checker from Northern Tool or one of the automotive stores. It just plugs in and you read which lights are lit by turning on singnals, operating the brake controller manually, etc. If you have a hot charge lead it will also light a light for that. It is much easier for most folk to do this than mess around with a meter or test light.
Unfortunately I have not wired an aftermarket controller into the newer Fords, so without being there, I can not be much more help. Maybe someone else reading this thread can help us out. Do all the newer Ford trucks have a charge lead and brake lead for towing prewired and is it neceassry to insert a fuse or relay to activate them? I have a 2010 for my service truck, but it came with the tow package so I don't know.
OK I took a test light and check my 4 prong rvrything worked, then I checked my 7 prong all lights worked but no battery or electric brakes so I crawled under truck checked where it plugs into factory loom well there is only 4 wires coming from front of truck but the harness going to 7 prong has enough wires so there is the problem. any ideas on where I run wires to tie in for batt and electric brakes thanks

That's what I was afraid of. I don't have a schematic to tell you where to pick up the wires from the controller to plug under the dash. I am guessing under the hood. This is just a thought, but when I work I have a 15 minute rule, which means when I am stuck, I call someone. I am not sure if the controller manufacturer might be able to help since they furnish the plug, but it never hurts to try. You also may simply need to put in a fuse or relay. If we had my truck and yours side-by-side we could compare and figure it out probably. Do you know anyone with the factory setup in your model where you can compare under the hood fuse boxes or is there anything in the owner's manual on fuse location for the leads you are missing?
Clearly you are going to have to pull some wires, if you need seven and only have four.
yes Iput the fuse and relay in the fuse box where it showed they went I just do not understand why they have the plug under dash but not the wires running to the rear kida dumb

I totally agree. At least now, I think, you know why things aren't working.
sorry but i was way getting to hammered to help you last time i was here. i was reading your post ill see if i can get some schematic and scan them so i can post them for you! you might also see if the local trailer place might be able to give you some in-site!
Well today I finally ran 2 wires from under dash to rear of truck tied them into contrller and rear 7 plug now I have brakes and 12 volts at last !!!!! I still can"t believe ford does not run all the wires to the back but runs everything needed under the dash makes no since at all
