I'm planning on changing my trams fluid an filter an seen it says to use mercon sp. I never heard of that b4. Hoping u guys can tell me the proper fluid to use. An how many quarts would I need.
Also seen a canister up on the passanger framerail that the lines go to the trans. Anyone know what that is.
Unless you have reason to believe you've had something "let go" internally, you don't need to drop the pan for the internal pick-up tube/screen. Just need to replace the external filter that's between the Passenger front wheel & bumper. You'll need 8 quarts exactly when you drain the pan. Here's where I get my filters & fluids for this project.
I wood rather pay the extra money an get what it says to use than save a few bucks an risk my trans. I don't have 3 grands layin around to spend if my trans goes out.
Oh hell the trans god has spoken and it looks like we can use something else. Mr Mark will it mix with the mercon that is already in there.
If you have MERCON in a trans that requires MERCON SP you're going to have expensive problems. The TorqShift will not live long on MERCON fluid. Get it ALL out, not just what's in the pan, before damage occurs.
Mark i don't have mercon in it i just didn't type SP , MERCON SP is what is in it and will the maxlife mix with it if i were to switch. You know you opened up a can of worms when you the TRANS go to guy has blessed another fluid.
Mark. Why did Ford put Mercon SP in this trans to start with then. An is there a way to do a complete trans flush at home.
Because MERCON SP is a lower viscosity fluid that helps improve fuel economy AND it has other properties that the solenoids depend on. MERCON does not have it.
I don't have a good way to flush this trans at home. It isn't simple.

MERCON is a very different fluid than MERCON SP. It's like calling your truck and F150. It's not the same thing. I'm and engineer, we're precise!
You can mix the MERCON SP that is in it with the MaxLife.
