I'm planning on changing my trams fluid an filter an seen it says to use mercon sp. I never heard of that b4. Hoping u guys can tell me the proper fluid to use. An how many quarts would I need.
Also seen a canister up on the passanger framerail that the lines go to the trans. Anyone know what that is.
You only have to change the external filter. You don't have to drop the pan. There is a drain bolt. The internal filter stops trees and boulders and only needs changing during a rebuild.
Hey 05 f250 i would not use the valvoline max it is most likely cheaper, but only use the mercon sp or lv. The manuel only calls for the ford stuff and its not worth risking your trans for a few bucks

If you can find a shop locally that uses BG Products, I highly recommend their universal synthetic fluid. I am in the automotive industry and was lucky enough to take a trip to BG's plant in Wichita, KS. Very impressive operation and I got to spend time with their head engineer- even after 18 years in the business I learned A LOT during that visit. That company has done the R&D and truly knows automotive chemistry.
Bottom line is that their fluid meets the specs of most fluids, with a few exceptions. I did a full flush with their system, including the cleaning and conditioning chemical, and refilled with the synthetic fluid. There was an immediate and very noticeable improvement in the overall smoothness of the transmission. The fluid has been in for about 20,000 miles and all is well.
