2006 no GEM module? Help!!

So I am helping a friend who just picked up an 06 F250 SD XLT. He has a keypad on his door and wanted to know the code. I said that's easy it's on the GEM module.

This is where it gets good, there isn't one? There are two studs on firewall where it would mount but that's it nothing.

He got the truck for a great deal and you can tell drivers door was replaced and more likely one was used with a keypad?

As I understand it the keypad works no different than the remote except it is provided power and the lock unlock code is still wireless.

So this brings the question??? What is running his 4x4 and wipers and interior light delay and all the other misc electronic functions??? Everything else works great. There are way to many wires running into mine for it to be nothing more than key less entry. I have an 05 FX4 and his is a 06XLT 4x4.

Thanks in advance.

The GEM module went away somewhere around 2002-2003. It was replaced by a Vehicle Security Module, a 4WD control module and some of it's functions were moved to the instrument cluster.

As for the keypad, it is either wireless and uses a battery, or it is wired and connects to the VSM directly. The wired keypad does not use RF. The wireless keypad is thicker and has obvious indents in the side where it can be pried open to get to the battery. The wired keypad is very thin and doesn't have the indents.

The security code is on the Vehicle Security Module. The VSM is on the forward firewall, above and behind the radio. If you stand on your head and stick it under the dash, you can look up and see the VSM. It is usually hidden behind some insulation. It is a black box with 3 connectors. The label faces forward, so you'll need a mirror or something to read the label. Some people have successfully put a small camera up there and taken a picture of it. The lock code will be the 5 large digits on the label.

So thats all that box does?

As I said in the original I have an 05 that has the VSM which I mistook for the GEM. He has nothing there. So pretty safe to assume all that box is, is for the keyless entry as my truck does not have any PATS or autostart features?

There has to be 25 plus wires going into the VSM so all I can think of is the door lock "flip flop" logic for the lock actuators all pass through it?

Yes. The VSM handles keyless entry and the wired keypad. If the truck doesn't have a VSM then it doesn't have those features. The VSM also apparently handles the Autolamps feature. At least it does in my model year truck, according to the wiring diagrams.
