Noise was something more like a roar and it is only when I am going faster than 50 mph. I couldn't really say where it is coming from, never heard it before.

How is the shifting after removing the tranny fluid????

Try to determine where the noise is coming from, like under hood, mid way on the chassis, or more toward the rear & if it seems louder on one side. Is the noise louder with power on, or off the drive line. Is it there when you drift in "N" at the noise speed???

You say it's a new noise, so what event preceeded it's coming about. Wasn't after a mile long WOT burnout was it!!!!???? lol

Here is a link to the "Poor Mans Oil analisis", so that you can interpret the blotter stains your tranny fluid makes. http://themotoroilsite.com/phpbb/vie....php?f=9&t=980.

Alright, here is an update on what I've got going on.

The noise, thanks to a thread I stumbled upon, is almost certainly the front left wheel bearing. I read about someone with a similair problem and talked to my mechanic, almost positively the left front wheel bearing. At least it isn't my tranny.

The tranny shifts the same after taking out the fluid; better than before, but not perfect. I have not noticed any change for a little while so I am going to have it flushed soon. I have noticed that if I accelerate at around 3/4 throttle, it shifts almost perfectly. I have noticed that I am having a little more of a jerk from 1 to 2. Also, I am finding that the best way to get a smooth downshift is to not hammer the accelerator, but instead apply steady pressure. This way it shifts pretty smooth. As a rule though, when I go WOT it is still clunky, but better than before.

Thanks Guys.

Will be interesting to hear how the tranny finally does after a filter change & full fluid pump out, so keep us posted, maybe you'll get lucky & that'll improve it enough to be acceptable. Doesn't sound like it's too bad right now, so seeing as how it hasn't changed any lately, I agree it's time for the full tranny service.

So I got my tranny flushed today. Started out like normal, but by the time I got home, smooth-as-butter upshifts, awesome downshifts (we're talking really quick and smooth). There is only one problem: during the flush I realized that it was taking a very short time. So I asked, if they were going to change my filter. You probably figured out the answer: "No, we don't do any internal work."

. . . . . .

So to get to my point, how important is the filter? If I want it changed I will probably have to have the pan dropped and lose some of the new fluid, right? The mechanic said there was only about 2+ qts. in my pan.

Well let me know, meanwhile I will be smacking my forehead in disbelief.

Well if it's shifting ok, for now at least, I'd leave it alone, you know, as the old timers would tell me, "don't fix what ain't broke"!!!!! lol

If it breaks bad later & begins to act out & the fluid looks prematurly dark, doesn't look, smell, or feel good on the blotter test & or a line pressure test indicates low pressure, then maybe consider doing a pan drop & filter change & do it with a Motorcraft, or Filtran filter, not some store, or other, out of country off brand.

Good feedback on your tranny troubleshoot & to hear it's now shifting better & your satisfied.
