I have a 1998 F150 with an E4OD Transmission and the shift from 1 to 2 is very rough. It doesnt do it all the time, at least not as harsh all the time. But, it is pretty consistant. The shift to and from all the other gears are fine.
I'm kind of a do it yourselfer, but I really don't have a lot of experience with transmissions.
when someone has a transmission shift problem, the first thing you normally ask is "what condition is the trans fluid, and when was it changed last" ? dirt and crud in the oil make for problems. Never hurts to drain and install new oil and filter, clean the pan and magnet, and wipe off the valve body.
The fluid was changed last year by a local shop... I just checked it today and it was full, and a nice clean orange color.
Would dirt and crud cause this problem to happen only when shifting from 1st to 2nd? And not through the other gears? You can barely feel it shift through the others, but 1st to 2nd is pretty harsh....
I most certainly will try the things you suggested however, since this would be a simple, cheap fix...
Been a while since I had an e40d apart, but you should be able to replace an accumulator spring just by dropping the pan and taking the accumulator off. I was thinking accumulator spring too.
As sure as I can be.... I used a guide, that I believe I got on here, to help me decipher the sticker codes from the sticker on my drivers side door.....
This is the only confirmation that I have found that tells me it is the E4OD.
