I've got a 1994 Mercury sable with 112,000 on it with a AXOD. I had the transmission replaced with a rebuilt one from ford when it hit 100,000 miles. Iwas curios if this tranny a AXOD is electronically controlled like the 4r7ow on my pickup. And also if it had any relation with the AOD tranny. I've heard people say that the trannys built by mercury and taurs were junk. I'm just woundering why. The car doese have a very strong engine the good ole 3.0 OHV V6 never let me down do wish it had the 3.8 for more power but thats the way it is.

John, I have a '93 Sable with the AXOD. It is not electronically controlled. I think there is an electronic version of the AXOD which is designated as the AXODE.
To be honest, I don't know how related to the AOD it is. The fact that it is a transaxle (not just a tanny) would make me think that there are some considerable differences.
With the 3.0L motor, you should feel fortunate. The 3.8L motors in '92-'95 Taurus/Sables are famous for blowing head gaskets.
Ya I do feel fortanite now that i havent replaced a gasket. How many miles on yours. I'd thought is was somewhat electronically controlled because ther is a wire plug were there is sevral wires going in to the tranny write by were the shift mechanism is and also i dont see any TV cablr. Please fill me in.
Ya know, your tranny may be different than mine. It could be that you do have the AXODE, despite what your pan says on it. All those wires seem to indicate an electronic control setup. Do you have a pushbutton to engage OD, or do you have to move the shift lever to OD?
The AXOD became fully electronic in 91. Prior to that it had a electronicly controlled lock up.There are very few similarties between an AOD and AXOD but it is very similar to a AX4N. Also the 3.0 eng was and is much better than a 3.8

dro man, thanks for the explanantion. But I'm still confused a little bit. If the AXOD is fully electronic, than how is it different from the AXODE? Or are we talking apples and apples here?
I see that i wasnt clear about that. In 91 the axod in the cont. went fully electronic thus the name AXODE. The taurus - sable line may have been a year behind but i think they were fully electronic in 91 also. I looked through my shop manual CD's that only go back to 92, and 92 (taurus) is electronic for sure. As for the differences, the E version has electronic shift valve solenoids on the valve body and the govenor is replaced by a veh. speed sensor along with a few other changes.
Well mine being a 1994 i would guess its a electronic. But Since My gearshift has opions of P-R-N-OD-D-1 without a over drive switch what parts are electronically controlled? also the pan says AXOD.

Shifting, line pressure, lock up and so on.1 of the models (LX,GS,GL?) had an OD cancle switch on the shifter after about 96
I didnt know my tranny was electronic. but why would ford put axod on the pan when it's really a axode or am I Confused. Also I had to purchase a brand new transmission from ford because the old on started to netural out. Has any Else had this problem I've heard these transmissions are natorious for going bad. Any input would be Greatly epreciated.
