Slippage on 2-3 shift

I have a `91 Explorer with auto trans (A4LD?) that has started to slip on the 2 – 3 shift when the engine rpm’s are about 2,200, but if it is accelerated more aggressively and it shifts at around 3,000 then the shift seems quick and crisp. All other aspects of the trans operation are normal.

Are there any external adjustments that could be made to this trans that would firm up the 2 – 3 the shift at the lower eninge speeds?

Thanks,

Mark

then there is a problem with the reverse/high clutch. No adjustments as this is deep internal. Check operation in manual 1 and 2 to see if those are solid. This clutch is also used in OD This age transmission usually has trouble with the low/reverse servo which easy to change. Any delayed reverse? This won't help third. Only advice is to take it easy in third. Your days could be numbered

The 1 - 2 shift in both automatic and manual modes is fine. Also, there is no delay going into reverse. All else with the trans seems to be fine, just a problem with that 2 - 3 shift getting sloppy. Why would it shift so much better at a little higher rpm?

Slippage on 2-3 shift

1. Poor engine performace or vacuum leak
2. Valve body leaks from loose bolts
3. Stuck throttle valve
4 Damaged Intermediate servo release or leaking reverse/high clutch piston check valve.
5. Check operation of kickdown cable

Short of dropping the pan and tightening the valve body bolts to 7-8 ft-lb there is not much you can do that is simple

Thanks for your comments. Maybe I should consider dropping the pan. Other than tighten the bolts what else within that area of the valve body could I do?

There is a newer filer you can get from www.bulkpart.com top of the line SPX wit the MicroFelt element $10 that can actually filter. This will cost you $23 in stores so it more than pays for shipping ($7.50). Pan gasket must be ordered seperately. They also have the ATSG manual for $16. They sell the double thick valve body gaskets, only noted by the higher price, if you go further into the transmission. The low/reverse O ring is always bad to some degree in these. They used to sell a gasket kit but they don't list it anymore.
