I have recently come accrost a thunderbird that locks like it has a FE but it has an factory air gap with a holly 4bbl but I havent herd of that, Does any one know what it might be? It hac large intake ports and Mercury valve covers and is a 63 or 64 car.
See if the block extends below the crankshaft centerline. If it does it's probably an FE. I dont know the last year the y-block was used, though.
The MEL came to mind, so I looked into my "Thunderbird Milestones" book. Looks here that the 430 Lincoln was an option in '59, and the other engine of that time was the 352. Then in 1961 only the 390 was availible, and in '66 the 428 was made avialible with it.
The '58-'60 had two sets of triple tail lights. The '61-'63 had two single sets of round tail lights, and the '64-'66 had two big bars in a single chrome frame with the thunderbird insignia in the middle of the lights.
The resaon I thought of the MEL is because they had one with valve covers that had the name like...
M E R C U R Y
Really widley spaced, and the letters were skinnier.
As far as I can see the block does extend like the FE and the exaust ports are like the FE but the heads are full not part of the intake like the FE and it has 6 valve cover bolts not 5 and it has all the othe features of an FE. Can you tell me more about the MEL what is that, and what are the features of a 430? Ths block has flared up my curiosity.
MEL is mercury lincoln edsel ..these engines are simmilar to the fe but they are differnt . One strange thing though, there were 361 edsel engines , are they FE's or FT's ? They are actually both ! The passenger car version of the 361 was used in '58-59 edsels and as a '58 ford police power option only !

i got a set of these mercury valve covers that came off a 67 or 68 Mercury cop car with a 410FE. Can anyone tell me anything about these 410's? i'm thinking of building it for my current project....84 ranger 2wd (originally) now has a dana 70 rear, a dana 44 front with 4:11s 35x16x15 boggers, 4" body lift, 4" suspension lift. had to fabricate about every engine, tranny, transfer case, and running gear mount and bracket on this thing. should be a hell of a fun mud truck when it gets done.......maybe this year.
not to steal your show, but i too am working on a ranger to 4 wheel conversion. mine only has a 90'5.0 ho, it is in just not wired yet. but have gmc 2 1/2 ton axles waiting to go in next.
hit me up some time to discuss the trucks some more in detail.
are you looking for bore x stroke, or HP/TQ numbers? Anyway the info I have looks like this. About 330 hp and 444 tq. 4.05 bore and stroke 3.98....in other words a 390 with a 428 crank?
i knew they were a 390 with a 428 crank. thanks for the hp / torgue figures. any suggestion on what to do to get some more hp and torgue? i'm gonna go with flat top pistons that are 110 thousandths taller from the centerline of the pin to the top. not sure what to go with yet for a cam. got a ford aluminum 4bbl intake, holley 750 carb, have to run exhaust manifolds( no room for headers on a fe block ranger). any ideas on what i should look for in heads? i've got about 6 sets of heads but haven't checked any #'s as of yet. are the 410 and 390 blocks actually the same block or is one better than the other? i've been told to use a 360 block because they were heavier duty being from trucks......any truth to this? i don't know alot about these fe's yet.....i used to be.....dare i say.... a chevy guy........but gave up drag racing for mudding and quickly realized i needed something good. in the last about 6 months i've managed to buy 1/2 dozen or so complete fe's and a **** load of parts. i bought a complete but dissassembled 390......supposed to be a 68 390 hipo engine....did they make such a thing and if they did how can i tell if this is really one? i only paid $100.00 for it. any info on these fe's will be greatly appreciated.
