ECT seems high

pulled the boat this weekend in my brothers truck. the one i rebuilt. i was runnin constand 218-224 runnin flat ground and hit the hills it would climb to 228. its got a new oil cooler on it and its runnin new ford gold coolant. (i know not the best but it does for now until i get cat coolant for his) anyways the fan wouldnt kick on until about 230 which i hit every now and then on a good slope. but after i unhooked from the boat monday the temps were around 214-218 unloaded. and at a stop light would climb to 220. i just havent figured it out. my truck (the one in the sig) runs inbetween 190-208 empty and its a dually. his truck is studded and everything. the water pump seems fine. i know it needs a thermostat being that if you let it sit for 5 mins idleing it will drop to 180 but the sudden increase is crazy.

for a side note the turbo is sticking but its being cleaned by me as we speak. i was runnin 1k egts pulling this weekend but even unloaded it still seems hot

sorry also forgot to mention that i was on matts 8k tune and the fan never kicked on and the glorified idiot gauge is what caught my attention the first time. so i know it got to 240 atleast once but then i returned the truck to stock and ran the rest of the way down to the coast. so the temps i described were when runnin stock

That does seem pretty high. My experience is that sometimes thermostats don't just stick open, the just get sticky. I've seen them where the temp would go up, and up, then suddenly the thermostat would finally pop open and they'd go down, and down, until it'd finally pop closed, or partially closed, or whatever.

I'd say fixing the thermostat is the first thing to do, then see what it does from there.

Ditch the tune and see what it does. Some tunes have been known to interfere with proper fan clutch operation. If that changes nothing then I would try the t-stat.

thats what i did i detuned the truck and it ran about 220. then get this on the way back from the coast (uphill most of the way) i ran it on the race tune and it ran right at 220 the whole time and egts were lower. i know the turbo sticking is causing some of it because of the high egts but i dont think thats the whole root cause

first of all if you susect a bad t-stat replace it. its far cheeper then an engine.
after that you may want to remove the water pump and look at the front cover behind it.
make sure the belt and tensioner are both good too.

yea egr valve is in and it has bullet proof egr cooler. (the truck in the sig is mine and the one im talkin about is my brothers but i rebuilt it)

Cheezit- i got a new thermostat today and i will install tomorrow after i finish cleaning the turbo and get it back in. but if i pull the water pump do they sell just the gasket to replace it? and also what should i look for in the front cover if i do have to pull it

look for pitting. the water pump is just an o-ring and yes you can get just that part.

My ECT is always at about 190, rarely does it go past that....

Hot or cold days.

Is my t-stat stuck open?

How packed with bugs and dirt is your radiator? Are the fins all bent up?

The thermostat starts to open at 190, so that is the lowest you should see. If it's lower than that it's probably starting to stick. Running empty, I run about 190-195 in most weather. If it's not going below 190 I wouldn't worry about it.

The thermostat isn't fully open until 219. I've seen temps as high as 225 pulling hard in hot weather and not really worried about it. I think I'd start to get concerned if it ran much higher than that.

it will run 220 in the hills empty. my dually runs 200-210 right now and thats in super hot weather 99-105. the radiator is brand new! i mean like a month old so i know that is clean and free for sure. im thinkin either water pump or sender. thats just me though. what are yall's thoughts. btw new thermostat goes in tomorrow had trouble putting turbo in today.

Ps i know my dually runs that warm because i have some geling in the system but that is in the process of getting cleaned out now.

Tyler- dont worry about it bud if it helps you out im all for it!
