Ok so the last few days here in the Salt Lake valley have been pretty hot. Now I bought my truck in may or 2010 and didnt put my insight on it until Nov 2010. Normally it sits right at 190 ECT 201 EOT and 160 TFT. But the last few days everytime it goes over 80 degrees I see higher temps. Now Im unloaded other then maybe 1k in tools and parts in the bed. And the SLC valley is far from flat. But im seeing my ECT's go from 190-220 in just stop and go traffic with the AC on. Also my TFT is getting up to the 180 range. Now this is going up some pretty steep hills at around 30-45 mph or so. On the freeway doing 70 with the AC on it was at 210 ECT 218 EOT and 171 TFT just unloaded. If I was pulling I wouldnt worry but unloaded Im kinda starting to wonder. Any suggestions on how to test the water pump or where to start. The only code I have is the p0401 and I always have that code. Ive cleaned the EGR vavle a few times but it comes right back. not sure if the previous owner had the EGR cooler welded but it is there. Truck runs really well no real problems other then a bit of turbo lag. Am I just being paranoid? I have no pukeing or loss of coolant at all.

While I agree with this statement. You might want to wipe the brown stuff off your nose.

if you have reason to suspect pump or cover failer the best way to check is visually

ok. i checked around the thermostat area when i had it out. everything looked ok. now i know its no where near the pump but around there it seemed fine. i have an exhaust leak somewhere around the turbo so i gotta fix that then i can take it on a drive and figure out what the temps are.

ok new thermostat works great so far. no load on so idk if it will act up with one on there. the old one looked fine to me though. i have no gelling in the coolant, new oil cooler, so what would cause it to freeze up like that? i know that on my truck my thermostat was stuck becuase of the geling that took place but this one is perfectly good it seems like

Hey I had to run down the highway today and running about 55-65 with a few redlights every once in a while my temps ran about 192-198 ECT and about 200-205 EOT. But then I got back into town with stop and go traffic and my ECTs climbed to 216 at one point and my EOT got up to 221. Outside temp on the truck was reading 107. Is that normal temps for that kinda heat in stop and go traffic or should I be looking into a t-stat?

ect/eot is read while moving at a constant rate of speed. it is normal to see the spread grow at a stop.

Cheezit - thanks for your wealth of knowledge. What is the highest sustainable eot for safe operation? I saw on a thread where 230 deg should be the alarm point. There are so many threads on eot and ect. It appears to be a grey area that keeps everyones attention. I do understand that many variables can affect those temps. Can you provide a guideline or scenario for avg Joe like me to watch for on these temps.

Thanks, any input appeciated

Back when the weather was cool my eot would seldom ever hit 200. Now it is in the upper 90s my eot will get around 207 ( no load flat grade cruise on 70) I towed a 16 ft trailer unloaded with cruise set on 73ish eot reached 220... Seemed high to me, I assume I would've busted 230 if that was a 5th wheel......well, that's what I am experiencing....I was running ac on high and tunnel ind's street tune

That causes concern for me. My ECT is almost always 186-188 unless it's real hot out then it will climb to 192-194. My EOT at cruise, level is +-8 deg delta. Now...when I stop at a light, both temps will go back down a bit and the delta spread will close to within 4-5 deg of eachother. Are those readings within the normal range? You'd think you'd wanna see cooler than hotter temps anyways.

you should have a 190 degree thermostat - so should be there when warmed up properly...

maybe your thermo is stuck open and not letting it warm up ???

Cheap part and easy replacement if you are concerned...

What about if my ECT is going well over 200 (like 210-216) during the day and slightly over 200 at night? Thermostat not opening up enough?
