happy fathers day to all the dads and grandpa's out there!!
I'm looking to have my truck media blasted in the near future and looking to see what the average price is. I want inside and out on the hood, fenders, cab, and bed of course. Hopefully under 2000??
Any help or if you know anyone in the bay area (CA) looking to do some work please let me know!
well are you taking it apart ?? your best bet is to shop around...and check on what they are doing today..as in show up at the shop and see for yourself ..I have done sand ..that is brutal on anything less then a frame ..and walnut shell ..get's in to everything ..but wont remove heaver rust ,if you have time look around you can find a deal when they have a slow period ..and want the work..

I've never done this so i'd like to have some comments as what is the best options. If it'll save me a few hundred bucks I'll sand it down. as for taking it apart, i am not sure. Should i take it off piece by piece ( not that there are many pieces) and drop it off or just roll it in the shop as a whole?
good idea on checking to see what they are doing, i deploy quite often so hoping there down time won't be when i'm gone.
Prices will be all over the board. It really depends on how busy the shop is. Also check out places other than body shops. Some tombstone places do blasting as a side job. Try to get references. I've had bodies sandblasted with good results but the guys I used knew how to blast sheet metal. It takes care to do it right without warping the sheet metal. I blasted two cars myself last year using sand but I've done a lot of my own blasting and know how to do it. I hate the job but with these two cars I didn't have the money to farm it out. I wouldn't have done it myself if I had the money.
Also, it's cheaper if you disassemble the truck and take it in pieces. I wouldn't take it to far apart. Cab without interior and doors and glass removed is about as far down as I'd go. The box I wouldn't tear too far apart any more than you feel comfortable and are sure you could reassemble. Take out any wood and remove the tailgate. I've know people who have removed every nut, bolt and rivet and have had the truck sitting for years because it's a lot of working putting everything back together.
Also, see if you can find a place that will epoxy prime all of the parts after they're done blasting. It really helps if your parts are going to sit for a while before assembly.
Hey Michael,
I had my 1950 F1 blasted this year. I used a mobile service that came out to the place doing the work on the truck. They blasted with baking soda - pretty tedious - but it won't harm the glass or rubber or warp panels. I paid around $1400 - my truck was a mess with bondo just caked on the fenders - I ended up replacing all them with fiberglass.
They earned every penny - there was soda everywhere. Some pics
of the process below. Good luck over there!

Hello Michel,
Thank you and Happy Father's Day to you as well...
I am in the Visalia, CA (Central Cali) and there is a place down the road from me that does this line of work.
To give you an idea, I called them and asked if they would blast my '56 frame and they quoted me $300.
As of yet, I am not in the position to have this work done, but when time comes, I will certainly look into them. The following is obtained by doing a Google search... Nathan's & Steve's Iron Shop
32254 Road 124
Visalia, CA 93291-9224

There is a place in Hollister CA. I think they are called San Benito Sandblasting.
I had a 66 Mustang body (complete...hood, trunk lid, doors) media blasted. He uses a plastic media & they know what they're doing, so there shouldn't be any warped panels.
They'll quote that it is time and materials, but they generally know how long it'll take to blast a body. For around $1500 he blasted the whole car which includes removing any bondo and rust. They then move it into a paint booth and prime it with epoxy primer before any new surface rust can form.
Everyone thanks for the information!! There is so much to inhale but i think now knowing what I've read it will be easier to digest. There's a few places up here in the bay area i'm just going to give a call or drop by.
Does the $850 include a coat of epoxy primer? I highly recommend it even if it's a quicky coat with some runs. It sands easy when you start doing your repair work and it will protect the freshly blasted metal from flash rusting.
$850 even without the prime is pretty good considering your location in CA, everything seems to cost more out there. I got different prices from quite a few blasters, $100-500 in price. You just have to shop around. Price isn't everything though, just make sure your guy has experience doing sheet metal.
