272 fuel pump replacement

It appears my truck will need a new fuel pump, normally I wouldn't mention anything on it as they're quick to swap out, but when searching for information on one for a 272 I came across some posts about using one for a 390 FE, because the original didn't have a vacuum.

All new to me for this engine so I have no idea what will actually work. If they all looked the same I wouldn't think twice on it, but the '56 seems to have a glass bottom (new to me. farthest back I'm use to is 67). The price difference is quite a bit, $15 or $60. Can I just put one in from a 390 FE?

And out of curiosity, what does the glass bulb on the bottom of the OEM pump do? I've never seen anything like it before.

Mine leaks out of the weep hole. Its a 272 2v Heavy Duty

Thanks

A 390 pump will work just fine. The glass bowl was for sediment/dirt to filter into, then you could remove and clean it out. Most new filter use canister filter on the bottom. I believe the glass bowl has been outlawed for obvious reasons.

So thats why I cant find a new replacement fuel pump for a 292 with vacuum with the glass bowl filter on the bottom like my 49-59 illustration book shows. I would prefer to have the bowl cause theres no other filter in the fuel system other than the sock in the tank, and the brass mesh screen in the carb.

So can I just swap in a 390 FE one without needing a filter on it?

the 390 Fuel Pump should work fine, i've heard of alot of people using them, but you can always buy a inline filter. there cheep, and you can get em at any parts store.

Thanks, I think the inline filter will be the way to go. From what I've heard the plus of the 390's fuel pump is that you can find them anywhere, unlike a 272 one.

One thing that caught my attention with this was that it was also about a vacuum, something about the dangers of not having one with your breaks or wippers (long hill plus mist). Anyone know more about that?

The vacuum pump on the fuel pump top was required in california. California at the time required vacuum boosted wiper motors to eliminate the wipers from stopping when you apply more throttle since the pump will spin faster and suppliment more vacuum basically. Same as how some vehicles got vacuum reserve cans to keep vacuum operated doors from slamming shut when you go full throttle.
