I was replacing my VCT solenoid on the drivers side. While taking out the torx bolt it slipped and fell into motor. It didnt sound like it dropped to far but hard to tell. I cant see it. me and 2 other people have tried fishing it out with a magnet for the past 2 hours with no luck. don't know what to try next. Dropping the oil pan? if I do this am I going to need to pull the motor up for clearance? or should I try pulling the valve cover? I'm not a mechanic so any help would be much appreciated.
i would say it prob didnt go past your valve covers because the oil gallys arent that big so the bolt more than likely just fell right up agains the head. I would just pull the valve covers. if its not there then it might have fallen down the front of the engine by the timing gears and chain.
I'm going to try pulling the valve cover tomorrow, but I've got a feeling it fell down the front into the timing chain. any ideas what to do if thats the case?
yea you will have to pull your fan and then shroud to give yourself room to work then take the front covers off. before i did that i would go out and buy a chiltons or haynes manual it will tell you all you need to know. I would go buy one to take the valve covers off also because they aren't like old vehicles where everything is easily accessable. you will need to pull off your dipsticks and a bunch of other stuff. it shouldnt be that hard just take your time. also to get the fan off you will need to rent a tool from autozone to twist the fan off. good luck.
Thanks for your help... going to get a chiltons manual and start pulling the valve cover right after work... I'll let you know where the booger was.
Thanks again!
I did something similar, recently. Not in the engine, but in the fender well. I had this tool rattling around in there like crazy. I borrowed one of those inspection cameras and was able to see where it ended up. Then I was able to guide a magnet to the tool and bring it back out. Would never have happened, w/o the camera.
Pulled the valve cover and there she was! Bad news is, after replacing the cam phaser its still running the same (****ty) I didn't change the one on the passenger side though... will do that tomorrow.
I am glad you got the bolt out. sorry it is still running bad. what is it doing? I had to deal with mine running poorly for quite a while, untill i discovered a few things. first thing was the charge was running low on my a/c. i then found a bad a/c hose. i replaced and recharged it and it idles smooth again, then i took throttle body cleaner and took the throttle body off and sprayed the heck out of it and alot of gunk came off of it. It now is running realy smooth and has alot more power than it did. I am not sure if yours is idling rough or not, but if it is you may want to try that.
