I'm wondering if anyone has a clue what a 460 out of an 83 F250 might weigh. I want to pick up an engine stand and hoist, and was wondering if something with a 1000 pound capacity will do the job.
As always, thanks for the help!
Thanks for all of the help and the link to the previous thread. I did do a search before I started this thread, but I came back with nothing. I'll probably spend the extra $ for a 2000 pounder just for a little added insurance.
When I got my reman short block 460 delivered to my house they (2 delivery guys in an S-10) showed up, I asked them how they were planning on getting that out of there? (I had no hoist at the time and told the delivery company it should be delivered in a lift gate rig.)
Well, not wanting to wait, the three of us picked it up and set it on my garage floor. I should really say, we managed to slow down it's descent to the ground a little. No doubt these things are heavy!
Does anyone have any recommendations on a chain hoist for pulling this motor? I think I'd rather use a chain hoist so it can pull double duty and also hang game. I've seen the Wilmar and Black Bull hoists on Amazon, and wondered if they are any good. This hoist certainly won't be used everyday, but I'd like to get one that isn't a cheap POS.
This project is just in the planning stage now. I am planning on making it next winter's project.
Thanks for any recommendations/comments.
Can't recommend a chain hoist, but I will say for the engine hoist go with the 2-ton unit.
I used my uncles 1 ton unit last weekend and it doesn't reach far enough into the truck to lift the motor straight up. I had to use a long 2x6 to hold the engine back until the motor mounts and pan cleared so I could ease it forward. And the pump mechanism is being pulled into the bumper . . . not good.
I am not sure I will be able to get the engine back in and mated up to the trans with it . . . might be a little difficult and result in a some swearing and wrench throwing
