how can you tell if someone put sugar in your tank, what do you check first carb, plugs ? im not sure it started running really bad realy fast and it crossed my mind i dont know what to look for
Get a locking gas cap, that was the first item I bought for my truck.
Pretty sure some of the sugar would dissolve in the gas, off course I never felt the need to see how gas and sugar react. Maybe I'll try it this weekend.
With the ethanol being added to gas today you could have water/ethanol mix that you sucked up. Wouldn't hurt to run some water removal and Marine Stabil through the truck. You could pull the hose going to the fuel pump and drain some fuel in a jar. Let the jar sit for a day or two and see if anything settles to the bottom.
Sugar, syrup in the fuel will cause a caramel like mess to form in the intake runners and valves. Of course, Snopes will say it will not harm the engine.
I had a car that I worked on that had sugar in the tank. The runners in the carb were filled with white crap, and it wouldn't run very well. I could see the crystals in the tank, so it just got swapped with another, the carb got swapped and it was ok then. The filter won't hold back dissolved sugar, and it will get past the filter. Happened to an injected car, plugged up the injectors, then it was ok. Mythbusters can KMA, I know what I had to do to get that to run again. Some of the time, they get it wrong.

Since DKF mentioned this, I thought I'd tell you about an eye opening experience I had a few years ago. I was filling up my Dodge/Cummins diesel at a gas station, and a guy pulled up to the other side of the pump in some beater compact car. He asked me, "Do you have a locking gas cap on your truck?" I said, "Yeah." He asked, "Can I borrow your key? My old lady has the keys, and I'm using a spare key, but I don't have a gas cap key." I said, "Will my key work?" and he replied, "Oh, yeah, they're all the same." He put my key in his gas cap and it unlocked without him having to wiggle it or struggle with it, and then he handed me back my keys and said, "Thanks." I was shocked! I learned right then and there that a locking gas cap really doesn't offer much security!
