Very firm shift

I got a 96 Ranger 4.0, auto trans, 4x4. Tranny shifts into gear very hard, and each upshift and downshift is very firm, bone jarring. No codes. Only thing that seems normal is convertor lockup. Everthing else on the truck is working fine. Dropped the pan, no shrapnel, not even 1 flake. Fluid is good. Anybody got any ideas?

The EPC solenoid controls the pressure developed and used to operate the transmission. If it fails, it could be setting the pressure too high. If you take it to a shop, they can operate the solenoids using a piece of test equipment to verify. The part is not real expensive, but I think you have to drop the pan to replace it. I think you have an EPC, but if you don't, you'd have a throttle linkage lever to vary the pressure, and possibly a vacuum modulator to tell the transmission how much load is on the engine. WOT will give low vacuum, and the modulator will keep the transmission in gear longer before upshifting. Again, I think you have an EPC solenoid that diddles a relief valve to modulate pressure.
