On my 2011 F150 XL, to keep ALL the exterior lights (except headlights) from coming on each time a door is opened, the answer is to get your Ford dealer to use their computer to install or change to the POLICE DARK MODE. It also keeps the interior dome light from going on and off when a door is opened or closed, but you can still work the dome light manually. I had this done at no charge and was told it was a "factory alternative" to the default setting, which I called "Christmas tree mode".
This is a great example of how Ford looks at what the consumers need by looking at what they do post-factory and then integrate that into a factory option.
In most police cars you will find a black out switch, which disables most lights, including brake lights. Its an aftermarket police upfitter option so they are all different, but you can see how Ford is paying attention.
