Hi,
My first post to the Ford Enthusiasts Forum. Here goes ...
I just bought a 2006 F250 Lariat. The previous owner did not have a manual for the vehicle.
When I open a door the dome light does not come on. Is it supposed to come on in that vehicle? The exterior light above the rear window that illuminates the bed of the truck does come on when a door is opened so it makes me think that there is a wiring issue with the dome light. I can light the dome lamps with the switches on the lamp housing so I know that it is working and the bulbs are good.
Does the bulb come on when you open the passenger door? Some of the Ford's have a multi-position switch, off, on and on when door open. Does yours have this type of dome like switch?
With all doors closed, and after you turn off your ignition, your radio should stay on and power windows will work. Open your drivers door and radio will turn off, and no more power to windows. If it doesn't, your door pin switch is bad (very common in these trucks). This is located on the door latch and you have to remove door panel to change it. Some people have had success with spraying WD-40 into the door latch, but that has never worked for me.
Most likely the reason why your dome light is not coming on when you open the door is because the GEM does not know the door has been opened when the pin switch is bad.

Reason: left out info
Another thing, I just went out and looked at my 2006. The switch that is on the dome light does not turn on the dome light, it turns on the reading lights on each side. The reading lights don't have anything to do with the doors opening. There is a separate bulb in the middle of the lamp for the dome, and that is the one that turns on with the doors. Maybe you just have bad center bulbs.
You're the man Erikkloss! Thanks so much for checking your 2006. I took a second look at mine and sure enough, there is a center bulb and it was only connected to one set of prongs. I popped it back into place and it lit right up. The prongs seem to have lost a bit of their "grab" and I won't be surprised if it pops out again while driving. Those prongs contacts are probably readily available so I might end up putting a new set in. Thanks again!
You might check the switch it self to see if the previous owner unplugged the switch. I know on my old 93 F250 that is what I did so the dome light would not come on when I opened the drivers door. But the passenger door the dome light would come on when it was opened.
Someone could have put the wrong bulb in. I bought some LEDs from Walmart(don't laugh), I bought the one the little computer said I needed, but they were a tad smaller in diameter. They worked initially, but soon started flickering and eventually work there way out. Put the factory bulb back in and it fits snug.
