Saw a few post a while back on ABS problems. I have a similar issues and found that replacing the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), code P0500, solved the problem. What wasn't so obvious was that is was the VSS, at least not to me. My speedometer needle would jump a little intermittently, then would be fine for a while, then do it again. Then my ABS light started coming on intermittently until it eventually just stayed on. With the ABS light on, the brakes would pulsate when coming to a stop. So I pulled the fuse and the pulsation stopped. No codes would ever come up, and I checked several times. Thought it was the ABS control module as other posts had referred to it. Then the auto trans would shift a little funny at low rpm's. This was all gradual and over the course of the last year. Finally, in the last two days, the speedometer wouldn't register until it hit 20 mph, the engine reeving to about 3000 rpm and shifting hard into second. Finally the P0500 code came up. Replaced the ABS speed sensor on the rear differential and all problems stopped. One little $25.00 item causing all that grief.
Referring to an ABS and VSS sensor, for months now the odometer on my 96 Ford Explorer XLT has been intermittent in keeping accurate mileage count. Now the odometer doesn't work at all. The ABS panel light has been on for some time as well. The DTC indicated that the front driver side ABS sensor was defective, so today I finally decided to change it out to see if this was the issue with my odometer. Well, it wasn't. the odometer is still doing the same thing -- nothing!
Someone replying to your thread mentioned something about the VSS sensor located on the transmission housing. Could this possibly be the culprit creating the problem with my odometer?

The VSS sensor is on top of the rear differential. Had this same problem a couple years ago. Changed the sensor and solved the issue.
