P0500
On Friday afternoon the ABS light on my dash came up, ran the codes on my SCT Livewire and came up with a "P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor A"
What should I be going after? Rear speed sensor? Front ABS sensors? Transmission speed sensor?
Speedometer is functioning 90% of the time, twice in the last 48 hours it wouldn't then shift hard and I would pull off to reset.
TIA
Edit: I have looked over the search results and wondered if there is a way to test the sensor with my multi-meter? Seems quite a bit of people had flashing over-drive light's at the same time, which I do not.
The VSS has been deleted for 1999. On vehicles equipped with 4-wheel ABS, the vehicle's speed signal is generated by the rear ABS sensor and sent to the 4WABS module. The 4WABS module then sends the vehicle speed signal to all systems that require a vehicle speed signal input.
On vehicles equipped with rear wheel ABS, the rear ABS sensor generates a signal and sends it to the generic electronic module (GEM) for internal use and then distributes it to the appropriate other users.
Speedometer receives its signal from the 4WABS module, or GEM, depending on the ABS system.
So, my automotive knowledge is very specific to Jeeps, but diagnosing a bad VSS on a Jeep is also difficult because it puts out a pulse, I think it's measured as a frequency.
My suggestion would be to inspect the connectors for corrosion before replacing parts. Then replacing the rear ABS sensor.
Does your scanner have any other functions for ABS other than pulling codes? I've personally never seen a bad ABS sensor. It's always a broken wire, from what I've seen.
P0500 is in section 310-03 (page 4326), 308-07A (page 4107), and 501-16 (page 2276) of service manual.
Do you have a factory service manual on hand? I have one available.
The tabs on the connector were so brittle one snapped off, so I zip-tied the other on to make sure it holds.
