Looking for more power as well as better mileage on long hauls.
What's the consensus for the best make and model.
What features do you like? Dislike?
What would you do over if you were making the decision to buy again?
For the 6.0L Powerstroke you can't beat the power of an SCT programmer and custom tuning. I run a tow, street, and x-race file from Innovative Diesel on my 2007 F350 DRW. The only real gripe is that the SCT is not a shift-on-the-fly tuner, it adjusts both the ECM and TCM for a more reliable file and that requires the truck to be off to program correctly. I don't regret the choice at all.
Stock - 13.3 MPG combined / 14.8 MPG Highway
Tow - Haven't tested milage
Street - (approx. 400RWHP file) 14.6 MPG combined / No test of Highway
X-Race - (approx. 420RWPH file with firm trans shifting and TC lockup) 15.3 MPG Combined / 16.4 MPG Highway
Plenty of power from these files, and you will see an improvement in mileage as long as you don't drive it like you stole it.
Street - ~400RWHP -
If I'm towing, or plan to tow anything during the day, I'll load the tow file before I leave the house. If I'm out daily driving there is no reason to shift tunes with two exceptions 1) you're experiancing a new problem, or 2) you're getting ready to show off. Niether of which I worry about much. I allow my right foot to determine how much power I put down, and how high I allow my EGT's to climb, and normally I'm running my X-Race file.
One other thing, if you take the SCT route you'll also need a monitor like the Edge Insight to keep an eye on things like the EGT, or install a set of gauges.

I have been looking at the "Scan Gauge 2" to monitor my engine/trans parameters. Of course, if I do this, I will also need gauges to monitor both EGT and Fuel Pressure... Does the Edge Insight monitor do all of the cool stuff that the SG2 monitors, plus EGT and FP to boot?
Also, if so, which Edge Insight model should I look at investing in, if better than the SG2 + gauges option? Ther.e are several options at different prices.
For the Edge unit to monitor EGT and Fuel Pressure, you'll need to invest in the EAS for it along with the EGT Probe and FP sender. The CS/CTS also monitor FICM voltage and a hole mess of PIDS, its a great cost-benifit ratio.
I'm the type that likes the look and reduncancy of traditional guages. So I have both the Insight for easy monitoring, and AUtometer guages for EGT, and Trans Temp (which I'm in the process of expanding to include oil and fuel pressure).
Are the shift-on-the-fly units worth the additional cost?
Thanks!
Dwain
The shift on the fly units additional costs usually include a transmission and most people I know usually end up driving them on one setting anyway. They just aren't worth the "convenience" and ADDED expense and the performance won't be as good anyway.
