Overall, I think Ford still has a lot of shift tuning issues to work out on the 6R140. Hopefully they start to get it figured out soon. I like the transmission overall but it has it's aggravating moments.
6R140... Right. Thanks for the correction Deere.
(I'm not going to say that anymore. Too familiar...)
Off topic for sure here. But even in it's stock form it isn't 'even well' before 500 hp? I know plenty of Allisons holding together just fine putting down that much up 500hp at the flywheel. I opted for a TC myslef only becuase I wanted to exceed that but had no problems up until that. NOW if your going to pull a sled every weekend then yea - you'd prolly want that TC even in stock form. Just my $.02
I think we are in the same neighborhood. You are talking flywheel and I speak in terms of rear wheel hp. I use RWHP because once she leaves the factory, it's the only way we can effectively measure and compare horsepower.

Yup we're talking apples-to-apples then. That's why I worded like I did
Maybe POS is a little strong. But my brother bought my old 02 duramax,we ran it with 75 hp chip empty and 50 hp pulling a snowmobile trailer. Transmission puked out. Now its rebuilt with a triple disk torque converter and 5 clutches per gear and good for 800 hp. He loves it now. I think in stock form with stock engine they were good. But when you can get HIGH 20's mpg with a chip its hard leaving them stock. Anyway he's the one who called the allison every name in the book when it crapped out,now he's happy. He would sooner bike to work than drive a Ford. Makes it interesting now!
WOW! POS? I owned an 07 Classic Chevy 2500 CC SB w/ D/A. I loved that truck. I would still be driving it today if we hadn't enlarged the 5er. It had 52K on it and never missed a beat. The only reason I traded was it was being pushed around by the 5er.
I test drove all three brands DRW's and went with the Ford. The new GM DRW's are fugly! The Dodge DRW was my first Dodge test drive ever and will be my last. All were fully loaded, diesel, crew cab, long beds. The Ford was hands down the winner in features and appearance. The GM and Ford were comparable in performance. No real disearnable difference in seat of the pants test drive. The Dodge, well, let me just say, mama taught me that if you don't have something nice to say about someone (something), don't say anything at all.
That Allison tranny is IMO the best one on the market. Very predictable, reliable, and smooth as silk. I pulled a 14K Montana 5er for 4 years before getting the 18K Raptor. Also a 14K flat bed from MO to WY numerous times. The D/A pulled without hesitation. I do miss the smoothness of the Allison. Hopefully FOMOCO will get this tranny calmed down and acting like it should.
I hate to keep talking relatively off subject in this thread, but I ran into a Baltimore Allison plant worker tonight at a local watering hole. He said don't be surprised if in the near future you see the A1000 become a 7 speed transmission! Also to those of you that don't believe that GM has anything to do Allison, the same guy just ordered a Chevy pickup and got over $7,000 in "employee" discounts.
For what it's worth, GM sold Allison in 2007 but retained the Baltimore plant which builds the A1000. I have no idea what has transpired in the last 4 years since that sale and of course the bankruptcy.
I wouldn't call the Allison a POS, but I also wouldn't throw 500 hp at it in stock form. Everybody that I have seen pusing the envelope with a GM truck has needed a torque converter well before 500 hp. It will be interesting to see if this 6R140 holds up as well to high HP loads as the 5R110 has.

I am a little surprised Ford had any problems with the 6R140 after having steller performance and reliability from the 5R110.
Well the 6R140 is a totally new platform so I guess growing pains can be expected with that. I don't think the actual strength or reliability of the transmission have come into question yet, it just needs some refinement in the shifting department.
i like the chevy commercial were there 1 ton is runing down a wet, bumpy, dirty road and towing a bobcat runing over a log mud splashing every were and when he gets to the day care the truck is spotless! what a commercial
My power stroke got out run by a shelby cobra last night I need to learn how to launch this truck tow/haul on, rearend locked, advance track off, power brake it? That's a lot of buttons to push
