What is "Regen" reallydoing?

There was a short description in the supplementary Powerstroke manual. It said additional fuel is injected into 4 cylinders to raise the EGT to accomplish the burn. It will do this for 8 to 20 minutes. Not sure how much extra fuel, but I have noticed my instant fuel economy reading to drop from 14.5 tp 12.5 when driving around town.
