The copper stud on my '50 Flathead V-8 6 volt starter is stripped out. How hard is it to replace... ? Would it be easier to get a dye and make it smaller? What is your opinion on resolving the issue?
It's a fairly easy fix. It has a grove on the part that is inside the starter that field coil leads solder to. You'll need a larger soldering iron to desolder and resolder the leads. There are insulating bushings surrounding the stud so it doesn't ground out on the case. It's been quite some time since I had to do mine but it wasn't that hard.
If you haven't already removed the starter front the truck just remember when you remove the two bolts holding the starter to the bellhousing be careful when pulling it out. It will come apart in pieces.
BTW, post somewhere where you're located, maybe some one is nearby with experience doing this and is willing to lend a hand. You can list you location in the upper right corner of your post by editing your profile.
