The starter on my 75 Ford (inline 6) won't engage or crank on the truck and when I bench test it by connecting it to a battery and cables with pos on the starter cable stud and the neg on the starter body all I get is a spark show when I clip the cable on. This tells me it's shorting out somewhere. Any suggestions on where I might look or what I might do?
Joe,Hopefully there is nothing jammed into the starter gear assembly and freezing up the starter motor. If it was me I would go get a new starter. My past experience with trying to get a bad starter to work for a while longer has always left me stuck somewhere in the rain and dirt.I like to choose when I replace a bad starter so when they start acting up I just replace them, sometimes I don't get that option but it happens less than before, just me though.Sometimes a hard rap with a hammer will free up stuck contacts inside the starter and let you drive to the parts house.Good Luck.
I might have found the source of my problem. Took the starter apart and noticed that on the end plate where the brushes are, the insulator between one of the brush holders and the plate is decayed to the point where the holder is likely making contact with the plate. I assume that this would cause that brush to ground to the starter body. I'll know for sure when I get a chance to fashion a new insulator for it later.
I have the same engine, my starter cable was original and the insulation had completely worn through but only where it is held to the frame. Might want to check and make sure your cable is still good as well.
