I use a cotter pin puller, its shaped like a 7 and hook it behind the ****. Theres a spring there that you need to push on as you pull on the ****. Good luck.

Reach up under the dash and feel for a small button on the bottom of the headlight switch. You press it as you're pulling the headlight switch out, and the **** and shaft come out as one piece. To remove the wiper ****, you use billt28's method.

On some years (I think it's the Haynes manual that mentions it) the switches were up the other way, with the button on top.......mine, also 83, is like this.
It's not the most comfortable of jobs anyway, but especially if you're hunting in the wrong place for the button.

There is a notch on the front (nearest the dash panel) of the wiper **** - that is where you need to pull back on the spring clip to release it from the shaft.

Thanks guys that worked great. But do you have any suggestions how to get the climate control unit from out of the dash so I can replace the temperature cable? So I can go from hot to cold air.

What year? You say ONE cable, that implies you have AC, correct? Without AC, you have two cables.
