Yeah, they only have about 5 parts.
Kind of like a rotary motor.
You can see the repair kit on Autozones site.
4 small bolts and it's open.
I replaced one in a 2.4l Cavalier Z24 once
for a friend and couldn't figure out how
to prime it. Had to pressurize crank case with
air to get it done. That was weird.
Yup that confirms what I had posted before. it is easy, and it confirms whether the pump is working or not. Why pull the pump apart to add Vaseline, which alters the weight of the oil, when you can just put it in a can or pan of oil , and spin the pump? This really is a no brainer!
The truck has a 352 engine and I didn't bother to check the pump to see if I could open it up since it was new.
The FE series Blocks are what I was discussing with the Oil Passage that makes a 90 degree turn just after the oil leaves the pump! Make sure that nothing has gotten in that Ell on the oil passage, and blocked it up!
Have the heads been remove recently? installing the head gaskets wrong which happens an awful lot can cause no oil flow to the valve train. also installing the wrong head bolts in the wrong locations can do the same on an FE. One of the long head bolts is chamfered to run through the oil passage, and use of a standard head bolt in the chamfered head bolt location will stop oil from getting to the heads!
If I recall though you stated that you were not getting oil pressure at all or very low oil pressure, which would be most likely the pump or the pump gaskets, as the oil pressure is read at the oil filter mount just past the pump!
I will check on the oil passage to make sure its not blocked. I have not removed the heads so I don't think I need to worry about it. What I did do was replace the intake manifold as the truck had a 406 Tri-power that guzzled up the gas. I replaced it with a stock manifold. I did remove the oil pressure hose at the top of the oil filter mount to check for oil pressure and very little came out so I know that something is wrong.
Well, I decided to purchase a new pick-up tube and oil pump because I got tired of removing the oil pan too many times. When I put everything back and tested it with the drill, well what do you know, I got all soaked with oil squirting from the oil pressure gauge outlet. I didn't care I got soaked because the problem had been solved. Thank you all for your suggestions.
Glad you got htis resolved, I was going to recommend you make sure the pick-up screen was not resting on/too close to the pan. That will cause you to not be able to pull up oil...
